Many of the top artists, those heading the art market rankings, will have work on show at the art fair in Madrid, making it a unique chance to catch some true master pieces of our time.

From the grandmasters of the avant-gardes such as Picasso, Miró, Gargallo, Vieira da Silva or Duchamp, to more recent arrivals to international stardom like Damien Hirst, Anish Kapoor or Paul Morrison; not forgetting seminal names from the second half of the 20th century, like Andy Warhol, Lucio Fontana or Thomas Schütte. The best art from recent decades is on view – and on sale – at ARCOmadrid.

American Masters: From Pop Art to Conceptualism
Los Angeles’ role as guest city at the fair this year has motivated many galleries to bring pieces by those great American masters who created trends in contemporary art practice in recent decades. This is the case of Ed Ruscha (Omaha, Nebraska/USA, 1935), one of the masters of Pop Art. His works can be admired at the booth of the Paris gallery 1900*2000, and also at a monographic show on display at Sala Alcalá 31 in Madrid organised concurrently with ARCOmadrid. His paintings, books, photographs and drawings are a clear reflection of the visual language of Southern California: posters, buildings, liquid words and evocations of neon lights and capitalist culture define the style of this key artist.

Another emblem of Pop Art, Wayne Thiebaud (Mesa, Arizona/USA, 1920) is featured in Madrid thanks to the British gallery FAGGIONATO FINE ARTS. Commemorating the 90th year of this great American painter, the gallery is presenting a revision of the artist’s main periods at its booth in the GENERAL PROGRAMME. Though widely known for his still-life paintings with depictions of delis and diners, toys and consumer objects, he also tackled other genres, like urban landscape, portraying the hills and streets of San Francisco. One of the pieces on show at the fair is Little Deli, 2001, an oil on canvas that, with its simplified shapes and bright palette, and his extremely sensuous handling of oil paint, provides an excellent example of his work.

At its booth in the GENERAL PROGRAMME the German gallery HANS MAYER is showing pieces by artists like Andy Warhol, Tom Wesselmann and Keith Haring, with signature vocabularies which have earned them the status as icons of Western culture. Another of the artists whose works are constantly beating new records at auction is the New Yorker Jean-Michel Basquiat, who last season was second in the ranking of total volume of sales. His dramatic works, half way between expressionism and graffiti, can be seen at FAGGIONATO FINE ARTS.

Of course, the galleries exhibiting in the PANORAMA: Los Angeles section, also provide visitors with the opportunity to see first-hand some of the big names in Californian art. MARGO LEAVIN GALLERY is showing works by John Baldessari (National City, California/USA, 1931), one of the pioneers of Californian Conceptualism and an artist who, over the last four decades, has explored narrative possibilities through photography, video and artist’s books, to create allegories and tell stories.

L.A. LOUVER is another gallery boasting key pieces in the history of US art, with works by David Hockney (Bradford/UK, 1937), a British artist who moved to Los Angeles in the 1960s, whose signature collages with juxtaposed images taken with Polaroid earned him international recognition. At present, Hockney is working on an ongoing exploration of beauty and light with a passion and emotional intensity that saturates his palette.

In turn, REGEN PROJECTS gallery has brought pieces by one of the cutting-edge names in contemporary US art creation: Raymond Pettibon (Tucson, Arizona/USA, 1957). His expressive drawings deconstruct and reconstruct icons of contemporary culture from a highly personal narrative. Besides, this dynamic artist has illustrated the official T-shirt for ARCOmadrid_ 2010, on sale at the fair to give the general public ready access to one of the greatest contemporary artists of the moment. The profits raised will go to the Fundación Menudos Corazones charity.

Leading International Artists
Apart from the noteworthy selection of US artists, ARCOmadrid_ 2010 also offers the possibility to catch work by some of the most renowned contemporary artists. For instance, we have names who have already reached the status of classics, like the Italian-Argentinean painter and sculptor Lucio Fontana (Rosario/ARGENTINA, 1899-1968), whose torn canvases have earned him ninth place among the best selling artists in auction, reaching figures close to €10 million. This year, pieces by Fontana can be admired at FAGGIONATO FINE ARTS, next to pieces by the German sculptor Thomas Schütte (Oldenburg/GERMANY, 1954), whose ranking has soared in recent years placing him among the 200 artists born in the second half of the 20th century with the highest sales volume.

And as we can expect, some galleries are exhibiting paintings by Francis Bacon (Dublin/IRELAND, 1909-Madrid/SPAIN, 1992), one of the best rated artists in the world, to the point of even outselling masters of modern art or Impressionism like Van Gogh or Renoir. His paintings are on display at MARLBOROUGH and also at FAGGIONATO FINE ARTS, representative in the UK and in the rest of Europe of the Bacon estate.

ARCOmadrid_ 2010 is also the perfect occasion to see pieces by Georg Baselitz, a German painter whose work has been seen in the main museums and art centres of Europe and America, like the Guggenheim New York, or the Royal Academy in London, where he had a a major retrospective of his work in 2007. Five galleries are selling pieces by Baselitz: HEINRICH EHRHARDT, from Spain; SABINE KNUST, from Germany; CATHERINE PUTMAN and THADDAEUS ROPAC both from France; and THE PARAGON PRESS, a British gallery specialising in top quality prints and multiples.

Geniuses of Latin American Art
ARCOmadrid is always an excellent showcase for Latin American art. Indeed, the solid support the fair lends to Latin American art creation has ensured the presence in Madrid, year after year, of a considerable number of galleries from that part of the world. The strongest contingent comes from Brazil. For instance, LUCIANA BRITO GALERIA, in the SOLO PROJECTS section, is showing an impressive selection of works by the Ruptura Group, a collective made up, among others, by Geraldo de Barros (Chavantes, 1923-Sao Paulo/BRAZIL, 1998), Waldemar Cordeiro (Rome/ITALY, 1925-1973) and Luiz Sacilotto (Santo André, 1924-Sao Bernardo do Campo/BRAZIL, 2003). Ruptura is absolutely crucial for any proper understanding of Brazilian art in the second half of the 20th century, paving the way for later movements like Neo-Concrete Art, Pop Art and Conceptual Art in Brazil.

Lygia Clark (Belo Horizonte, 1920-Rio de Janeiro/BRAZIL, 1988) is another of the great Brazilian artists. She was part of the Constructivist movement in Brazil in the mid 20th century, and a co-founder of the Neo-Concrete movement. Always searching for interactivity and forging links between art and society, her work is on view at DAN GALERIA, a gallery also showing pieces by another artist, Mira Schendel (Zurich/SWITZERLAND, 1919- São Paulo/BRAZIL, 1988), whose use of language in her work exerted a major influence on Brazilian art.

The big Latin American names of the historical avant-gardes are also represented at ARCOmadrid_ 2010, Joaquín Torres-García (Montevideo/URUGUAY, 1874-1949) among them. Works by this Uruguayan artist of Catalan descent and founder of Constructive Universalism, a movement connected with European Cubism, are on show at three booths of the fair: ORIOL GALERIA D’ART, GUILLERMO DE OSMA and LEANDRO NAVARRO.

Rising Spanish Stars
ARCOmadrid_ 2010 is the perfect occasion to see pieces by Spanish artists working today, many of whom are also well-known internationally. One of them is Elena del Rivero (Valencia/SPAIN, 1949), a Spanish artist based in New York since 1991, whose work on paper draws inspiration from American art, particularly from Minimal And Conceptual practices, and also from a number of literary and historical-artistic episodes. Regularly exhibited in museums and art centres of Europe and America, her works are on view in the booth of the Madrid gallery ELVIRA GONZALEZ.

Another of the Spanish artists with international renown is Dora García (Valladolid/SPAIN, 1965), whose provocative work, on view at JUANA DE AIZPURU and PROJECTESD, is full of literary quotations with which García parodies prejudices, clichés and conventions, in a body of work of photographs and multimedia creations exploring and questioning the potential relationship between artist, work and spectator.

Also worth checking out is the work by Antoni Muntadas (Barcelona/SPAIN, 1942), a regular at many biennials – Venice, Paris, Sao Paulo, Lyon – and the Kassel Documenta, and with works in major international museums including MOMA, MNCARS and MACBA. LA FÁBRICA GALERÍA from Madrid is showing the works of this New York-based artist widely considered as the father of Spanish net.art.

One of the many Spanish contemporary artists sure to attract attention at ARCOmadrid_ 2010 is the photographer Pablo Genovés (Madrid/SPAIN, 1959). With echoes of the Düsseldorf School –and very specially Candida Höfer– this Madrid-based artist has created a discourse on destruction, picturing the final moments of things, in a reflection about the end of an era. Two galleries have photographs by Genovés on their walls, ESTIARTE (Madrid) and ART NUEVE (Murcia).

To give just a few examples of the high quality of artworks on show at ARCOmadrid_ 2010, we could name young Spanish emerging talents like Ángel Núñez, Ana Teresa Ortega or Íñigo Royo, on show at BACELOS, a gallery from Galicia; or major European artists like David Maljkovic, Markus Schinwald or Muntean & Rosenblum on view at the Austrian gallery GEORG KARGL… and so on until reaching 3,000 art practitioners from recent decades that make ARCOmadrid the must-visit event it is for all lovers of contemporary art.
<a

In Halls 6, 8 and 10 at the IFEMA exhibition centre, visitors will find a huge variety of masterpieces by some of the most highly priced artists from the 20th and 21st century, alongside pieces by emerging practitioners, accessible for those wishing to begin collecting of contemporary art. The extensive range of works covers all types of trends and media, from classic to cutting-edge.

The variety of works on view at ARCOmadrid_ 2010 will undoubtedly meet the expectations of big and small investors alike, and very particularly the public and private institutions, investment funds and corporations that are planning to renew their commitment with art and culture at this year’s fair. Art lovers will be able to choose from among a wide gamut of works that includes all types of art trends: from the 20th century avant-gardes, to the most emerging and cutting-edge expression of the moment, in conventional supports and in new media, by around 3,000 both mature and emerging artists. The 218 exhibiting galleries have brought their best works, with something for all kinds of collectors, from the newly arrived to the most knowledgeable and ambitious collectors.

Masterpieces at ARCOmadrid_ 2010
The GENERAL PROGRAMME is the perfect place to find masterpieces of contemporary and avant-garde art. Pieces by some seminal names who command the highest prices in the market. One of the priciest pieces on sale at ARCOmadrid_ 2010 is “The Beach”, by the Colombian painter, sculptor and drawing artist Fernando Botero, on sale at the booth of MARLBOROUGH gallery for €946,000. A superb oil on canvas by the highest-priced living Latin American artist.

Another expensive piece is on view at ORIOL GALERIA D’ART, a gallery specialising in 20th century masters and avant-garde artists. At ARCOmadrid_ 2010 it has an oil painting by the master of Constructivism Joaquín Torres-García. “Composición”, a work this Uruguayan artist of Catalan descent painted in Madrid in 1933, is on sale at the fair for €700,000, a good indication of the international recognition of Latin American art, sure to clock up plenty of sales at this year’s ARCOmadrid.

In turn, the London gallery EDWARD TYLER NAHEM FINE ART can boast some of the most famous names in 20th century art. For instance, the German painter Gerhard Richter, one of whose works in ARCOmadrid is available for a cool €750,000, one of the highest prices this year. Other top-rated work is an oil on aluminium titled “Paris Robe”, by the Irish artist Sean Scully, painted in 2008, which may be bought for €650,000 at LELONG.

Another French gallery, THADDAEUS ROPAC, is showing some of the most expensive pieces at the fair, like “Flying No.1”, an oil on canvas from 2009 by Ilya Kabakov, available for anyone with €440,000 to spare, or one of the most recent works by the German artist Georg Baselitz, “Magentahände”, 2009, with a price tag of €400,000.

Emerging Asian artists coming from new burgeoning cultural centres like India or China, account for some of the highest priced works at the fair,. A good example is the Korean ARARIO GALLERY, at whose space in the GENERAL PROGRAMME collectors will find the oil painting “Sweatopia”, by the Indian Jitish Kallat, valued at $300,000 (nearly €220,000), or the Chinese gallery BEIJING SPACE, exhibiting in ARCO 40 a piece titled “Chinese Portrait” going at $160,000 (€118,000), by Feng Zhengjie.

Investing in Spanish Art
As far as Spanish art is concerned, one of the top pieces is “Escrits y Bandes Negres” by Antoni Tapiès, a mixed media on wood on sale at SOLEDAD LORENZO for just €320,000. Works by this Catalan master –and one of Spain’s best rated artist– may also be seen in other galleries, like TONI TÀPIES, CAYÓN and GUILLERMO DE OSMA, from Spain, or at the French gallery LELONG.

Cristina Iglesias is another of the Spanish living artists commanding high prices at ARCOmadrid_ 2010. From among her various pieces on show it is worth highlighting an untitled sculpture from 2008, made with polyester resin and bronze dust, exhibited at the Madrid gallery ELBA BENITEZ with a price tag of €300,000.

In the medium price range, art collectors and lovers will find works by Spanish artists working in a large variety of media and formats, like the mixed media on paper “Face V” by Jaume Plensa, on sale at ESTIARTE for €50,000; an untitled oil on canvas by Equipo 57, with a price of €72,000 at RAFAEL ORTIZ, or “Diafragma Dodecafonico…”, an electronic animation by José M. Cruz Novillo valued in €132,000, on display at the booth of EVELYN BOTELLA.

Those wishing to pick up something by young emerging Spanish artists will find affordable pieces, like “Gran Vía”, a heliogravure by the Basque artist Unai San Martín, on sale for €500 at LA CAJA NEGRA, or “Idea brillante” by Amaya González Reyes, a young artist from Galicia, which can be snapped up at PARRA & ROMERO for €2,000.

Art for All Pockets
But those with lower budgets to invest in art or wanting to start a collection will find at the fair –especially true this year– works at very reasonable prices, starting from the more-than affordable €300 for the piece Nuevos Creadores by the Peruvian artist Sandra Gamarra, on display at the Catalan gallery POLÍGRAFA OBRA GRÁFICA.

The GENERAL PROGRAMME also has interesting options for very affordable investment, like “Bords”, a lithograph by Günter Forg, on sale at LELONG for a mere €500. Also for €500 is a piece by Gerold Tagwerker at the booth of the Austrian gallery GRITA INSAM.

Photography is usually a more affordable option, with pieces ranging from €400 for the pieces by the Andalusian artist Jacobo Castellano at BENVISTE CONTEMPORARY in the GENERAL PROGRAMME, or €1,400 for the photograph by Patricia Gómez & María Jesús González on show at RAIÑA LUPA in ARCO40, the subsection set aside for young emerging art.

In this same section, visitors can find other very reasonable options, like “Burn More Fuel” by Hadrien Dussoix at PROJECTRAUM on sale for €800, or a work by Sissi Farassat on display at the KASHYA HILDEBRAND gallery, where it can be picked up for just €750.

Opting for Emerging Art
The price range of the works on show in the curated programmes and in those focussing on emerging artists goes from €750 all the way up to €170,000: from the most affordable pieces by young art practitioners taking their first tentative steps in the art world, to more consolidated artists from emerging markets, ARCO40, SOLO PROJECTS, EXPANDED BOX and CINEMALoop provide an excellent opportunity to discover cutting-edge art and to start collecting with challenging work.

For instance, in André Romão’s one-man-show at BAGINSKI, we can find sculptures expressly made for ARCOmadrid, between €2,000 and €3,000. Also at the SOLO PROJECTS section, are photographs by the Tel Aviv-based Argentinean-born Miki Kratsman, represented by CHELOUCHE GALLERY, with prices starting at €2,000.

From Los Angeles, ARCOmadrid’s guest city, is a 17-strong contingent of galleries offering truly interesting options for investment. This is the case of L.A. LOUVER, a gallery with long-standing experience to its credit, presenting a composition by Ed & Nancy Kienholz titled “Still Dead, 1987”, valued at $250,000 (around €183,000), together with recent pieces by the US artist Don Suggs starting at $3,000 (€2,200).

Another LA gallery, PERES PROJECTS has a gamut of works at its booth ranging from affordable posters for €5 to Indian ink drawings by the New York-based John Kleckner valued at €25,000 or works in various formats by Dean Sameshima starting at €5,000.

These are just a few examples of the huge variety of works on show at ARCOmadrid_ 2010, made in all types of media and styles, and going for a big span of prices. Works of interest for major collectors in the fair’s Guest Collectors programme, as well as for the institutions or for the thousands of art lovers in general who dabble in collecting at a more modest scale, yet with an equally passion for contemporary art.
<a

This year it celebrates its fifth anniversary. ART FAIR TOKYO features a wide range of genres and periods of art, such as antiques, Asian art, nihonga, modern art, and contemporary art. ART FAIR TOKYO is where art enthusiasts, art collectors, journalists, and curators come together to seek artworks and confirm the latest trends of the art world. ART FAIR TOKYO 2010 will feature 139 top galleries, from Japan and around the world, — showcasing a total of approximately three thousands artworks.

ART FAIR TOKYO was originally started to introduce the diversity and the fascination of the Japanese art scene. Through the past four editions, it has become known throughout the world as one of the most significant art fairs in Asia.

Since its debut in 2005, it has managed to spread its message to a new generation of potential collectors; that art is something to buy, not just something to look at. Recently, as the number of art collectors in Japan has increased, people in Japan have started to notice the enjoyment and the social significance of collecting ‘art.’

ART FAIR TOKYO will continue to encourage the further development of the Japanese art market by offering the opportunity to discover diverse and high-quality artworks. Furthermore, ART FAIR TOYKO 2010 attempts to make the fair even richer by inviting art collectors and journalists from Japan and overseas, and strengthening partnerships with other institutions, such as museums and hotels.

Art collections support living artists, make history and culture, and enrich our lives. ART FAIR TOKYO offers the opportunity to start collecting art and broaden the range of your art collection. You are sure to find the artwork that you want from the diverse exhibits at ART FAIR TOKYO.

One of ART FAIR TOKYO’s features is that it offers a range of special benefits to VIP cardholders. ART FAIR TOKYO will offer even more VIP programs than last year by strengthening partnerships with THE PENNINSULA TOKYO, Quintessentially and a range of domestic museums.

ART FAIR TOKYO should reflect not only the ‘present’ but also the ‘future’ art scenes. Following in the footstep of last year’s special section, @TOKIA, which was- devoted to emerging young galleries of contemporary art,—a special section that will be set up for new galleries of contemporary art in the Lobby Gallery. This time, it will be under that banner of PROJECTS. In this section, 32 art galleries from Japan and overseas, all of which have been established within the past five years, will be showcasing works of contemporary art.

PROJECTS is an experimental platform for emerging art galleries. In addition, it is our goal to establish the purchasing art as a means to encourage the emergence of new talent and the support of culture.

Highlights

• SCAI THE BATHHOUSE will be presenting new works from the Japanese artist, Miwa Ogasawara, who is based in Hamburg, Germany. She has achieved acclaim mainly in Europe with her works being owned by such important museums and collectors as Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Burger Collection in Switzerland.

• Mitochu Koeki will mainly be exhibiting the works by represented postwar ceramicists, Lucie Rie and Hans Coper. Their works will be laid out in such a way as to resemble a traditional tea set.

• Kashima Arts will be presenting only one artwork that is a pair of hanging scrolls made by a master. The name of the master will be revealed on commencement of the fair.

• SUMISHO will be exhibiting pieces of Japanese ukiyoe by Hokusai Katsushika with a theme ‘celebrating the 250th anniversary of Hokusai’s birth.’ The gallery is scheduled to showcase The Boy’s Festival on the fifth of May, Sparrows and Pine Tree, Tsihi no hinagata, and Mt. Fuji.

• GALERIE TAIMEI will be presenting a solo show of Hiroki Kakinuma, a graduate student at Musashino Art University, who is popular mainly among contemporary art collectors in Asia. Approximately ten of his works including some smaller ones may be exhibited.

• Ginza Yanagi Gallery will be featuring a solo show by Hiroshi Okano, presenting his pastel drawings on which he has recently concentrated. This medium makes it possible to remain the freshness of colors on his works and to show viewers his different world from his other artworks.

• Ginza Kuroda touen will be showcasing new works by Kenji Hara. Mark Lyman, Founder/Director of SOFA and President, The Art Fair Company says, “The move to a Thursday opening and extended fair-run through Monday was recommended by our dealer committee in response to collector, curators and dealers needs. Judging from the remarkable success of our 16th SOFA CHICAGO held last November, we anticipate vigorous sales at SOFA NEW YORK.” Donna Schneier of Donna Schneier Fine Arts, Palm Beach, succinctly expressed the sentiments of dealers at the Chicago fair—“The fear is gone.” Lyman adds, “Collectors are giving themselves permission to buy again–at all price levels. And because contemporary decorative arts and design has flown a bit under the radar, the area has yet to be marked by a heavy preponderance of speculative buying and flipping. Bounce-back sales at SOFA fairs reflect the continuing stability of this market.”

www.sofaexpo.com
<a
