Art Basel Opens June 3
Published May 29th, 2008
The world’s biggest contemporary-art fair opens on June 3 for a preview day to about 8,000 invited guests. For the 300 sellers’ places, organizers said there were 1,000 applications, the most ever. Billionaires in Russia and other emerging markets have shrugged off the credit crisis to buy artworks.
Art Basel showcases items by more than 2,000 contemporary and modern artists. Last year it attracted 60,000 visitors, according to the organizers.
This year, the 39th fair has moved forward 10 days to precede the arrival of the Euro 2008 soccer tournament in Switzerland, said Peter Vetsch, Art Basel’s head of communications.
