Strong Competition Expected at 2008 Beal Bank Dallas Regional Science and Engineering Fair

DALLAS - The Beal Bank Dallas Regional Science and Engineering Fair will enter its second half-century when it opens on Saturday, March 29, at the Fair Park Automobile Building in Dallas. Nearly 800 local middle and high school students with the best science and engineering research projects in the Dallas region will compete for approximately $100,000 in prizes and scholarships, and the chance to make it to the Texas state and international science fairs.
Dr. Simon Dalley, President of the Beal Bank Dallas Regional Science and Engineering Fair, commented, “We are very fortunate in the Dallas region to have one of the largest and highest quality science competitions in the country, larger than many state science fairs, in fact.” Last year’s 50th- Anniversary Fair attracted nearly 800 students, and Dr. Dalley said he expects that many or more this year, with research projects on a wide variety of subjects, noting, “Many of the science issues in the news recently, such as global warming, diet-related health problems, and alternative fuels, are popular research topics this year.”
Additionally, some 350 professional scientists and engineers will judge the projects, mostly from the local area but a few from as far away as California. For many students, the Fair represents a rare opportunity to meet and talk with practicing scientists and engineers about their interests. “The young students who compete here will be the future scientists who solve our medical, energy, transportation, and environmental problems, so it is critical that we do whatever we can to nurture their work at an early stage,” said Dr. Dalley, who organizes the Fair together with colleagues from Southern Methodist University.
Top-three students in the 17 different science categories in each of the Junior and Senior Divisions are eligible for prizes and cash awards. Grand prize winners get to represent their schools and the Dallas community by competing against some of the world’s best science students at the International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF). The 51st Beal Bank Dallas Regional Science and Engineering Fair will take place March 29-30, 2008, in the Automobile Building at Fair Park in Dallas, Texas.
