A nationally known auctioneer who called livestock sales at the Ohio State Fair for nearly half a century has died.

Services for Merlin Woodruff are 10:30 a.m. today at Vernon Funeral Home in Urbana.

Woodruff, 79, died at home Sunday after several strokes and a long illness that stole his voice, friends and relatives said last night.

More than 500 people lined up during calling hours yesterday to pay respects, his great-nephew said.

“He sold in 48 states and two provinces in Canada,” said Todd Woodruff, also an auctioneer. “He once sold 13 auctions in a week.”
