Sheriff to host safety fairs in Pittsburg

Over the course of the next two weeks, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department and members of the Pittsburg Police and Fire departments and Crawford County Emergency Medical Services will show approximately 1,000 Pittsburg students just how to be safe.
Sgt. Aaron Calloway with the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department said that the safety fairs being held at all of the Pittsburg elementary schools are meant to teach students in grades 3-5 about safety.
“We want to make sure that everyone knows what is going on and how to be safe,” Calloway said. “That is why we have the fire department there showing them how to stop, drop and roll.”
In addition to general safety, Calloway said that they will also hold a bicycle safety fair while at the elementary schools with Roger Lomshek of Tailwind Cyclists.
“We are showing rules of the road and that kids need to wear helmets,” “We will also show them about traffic signals and we will set up a bicycle course for them to ride through.”
The fairs began last Monday with 230 students at Meadowlark Elementary and will continue this Monday at George Nettles Elementary.
Calloway said that students will get a hands-on look at just what each department does as well as tips on safety in a fire or other emergency situation.
