North Georgia State Fair

Marietta is celebrating its 75th year as the host of the North Georgia State Fair, originally known as the Cobb County Fair. The event began in 1918, but it wasn’t officially chartered until 1924. There was a hiatus during World War II and the Cobb County Fair Association rallied to have it re-chartered in 1951. The fair moved several times before settling on Callaway Road in 1966, which is now known as Jim R. Miller Park.

• Attractions: Back again — the Keith King BMX Bike Stunt Show, Robinson’s Pig Paddling Porkers, Oscar the Robot, the Human Cannonball, Brian Ruth the Chainsaw Master annd Frisco Brothers Petting Zoo and Pony Rides and, of course, more than 42 amusement rides.

• A Blue Ribbon Affair: An arts, crafts and classic car show will include more than 200 artists, antique cars from the 1940s, ’50s, ’60s and ’70s, and more than 300 competitive categories of non-commercial exhibits, such as canning, painting and quilting. 10 a.m.- 6 p.m. Sept. 15; noon-5 p.m. Sept. 16.

• Concerts: Free with admission, this year’s concert schedule includes a list of headliners.

• New this year: “All the King’s Horses,” a show that features breeds of horses used by nobility long ago, including Arabian, Andalusian and the Royal Lipizzaner Stallions of Austria. The equine exhibition is led by three generations of the Herrmann family from Austria and lasts about 30 to 45 minutes per show.

• Cost: $5; $2 ages 7-18; free ages 6 and younger. Parking $3. Rides $1 for 1 ticket, $10 for 22 tickets and $50 for 55 tickets. All rides require more than one ticket.
