Asian Health Caucus Hosts Chinatown Night Health Fairs

The first of a series of Chinatown Night Health Fair events was spearheaded by AHC on Saturday, September 30. The organization, in collaboration with the Mt. Zion Asian Heart and Vascular Center (AHVC) and the American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP), provided blood pressure and cholesterol screening as well as health information for the Chinese community. Student volunteers use bilingual skills, either in Cantonese or Mandarin, allowing them to better serve the predominantly monolingual community in Chinatown.

Diana Lau, RN, MS, CNS, the administrative director of AHVC, is the preceptor for the screenings. Lau had previously been the sole operator of a similar event in which she provided blood pressure screenings at the Chinatown Night Fairs. She has since then expanded the program through collaboration with AHC and APhA-ASP to increase outreach and provide additional services. She describes the events as being “great in that it helps to further cement the caring spirits and compassion in the AHC students for the community in which we are all part of. This event goes far beyond just helping the community, it is for fostering emotional and intellectual growth in our students as they interact with the participants and promote good health.”

The AHC Chinatown Health Fair screenings, which run concurrently with the Chinatown Night Market, will be held every Saturday night from 6-10 p.m. until the last Saturday of October. Better yet, make a trip out to Chinatown on Saturday night to get a firsthand experience of the night market atmosphere and to support your fellow UCSF students at the Night Market in Portsmouth Square.
