THE Department of Labor and Employment has provided at least 7,000 job opportunities at fairs in the first quarter of the year.
Labor Secretary Patricia Sto. Tomas said 6,815 applicants were hired on-the-spot (HOT), while 5,369 jobseekers were screened later and subsequently taken in by participating employers.
She cited a report from the Bureau of Local Employment that 177 job fairs, or about two per day, were held from January to March in coordination with local government units.
Out of 6,815 HOTs, 5,834 signed up with local firms and 981 for overseas jobs.
At least 5,050 of the 5,369 applicants were accepted after further screening for local employment, while 319 applicants clinched positions abroad.
Sto. Tomas says the number of jobseekers who were hired during the fairs is expected to rise, adding that the labor department is consolidating results of other job fairs from April until June.
Forty-five job fairs were set in June alone, while 42 were in May whereas April had 38.
