Philippine Job fairs ease country’s unemployment

President Gloria Arroyo’s target of generating six to ten million jobs during her term or an equivalent of 1.6 million jobs every year is nearing reality with the help of the job fairs held in the different parts of the country.

Job fairs are usually initiated by local government units in coordination with the National Statistics Office (NSO), the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), and provincial PESO for a one-stop-shop.

The sponsoring agency invites employers and legitimate recruiters for local and foreign employment in the job fairs. Applicants are assured of the recruiters legitimacy as they are accredited by the Philippine Overseas and Employment Administration (POEA).

Job fairs provide job seekers a wide latitude of choices, jobs that best fit their skills, training and educational qualifications.

Vice-President Noli De Castro even asked the Presidential Management Staff (PMS) at Malacañang to expand its job-generation program by holding more job fairs especially this Christmas season to make more families comfortable during the holidays.

He said that jobs would be the best gift for the million of Filipinos who have been waiting for a long time to be employed.

Even the sprouting of “tiangges” in the local scenes with the coming of the holiday seasons generate jobs, thus easing the country’s unemployment in the later part of the year.

Meanwhile, dreams of working abroad also has its bad side of the story.

The Department of Foreign Affairs reported an almost 5,000 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) are languishing in jails abroad.

As always, the DOLE continuously remind job seekers to check the legitimacy of their recruiters at the latest accreditation information of the POEA.
